Ten documents in the library in the category Waste

Waste: Waste is related to most of the productive and consumption activities of the modern world, and is especially acute in the developed world. Some waste can be economically recycled into useful products, and some have an economic cost that must be financed by societies. Some is toxic and must be neutralized. Some, like nuclear waste can be usefully transformed into more GHG free energy, but is infrequently used due to political decisions.

A 500 megawatt coal plant produces 3.5 billion kilowatt-hours per year, enough to power a city of about 140,000 people. It burns 1,430,000 tons of coal, uses 2.2 billion gallons of water and 146,000 tons of limestone. It also puts out, each year, a frightening list of noxious and toxic compounds. moreless

UNSCEAR, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, is the international body with the responsibility to report on the exposure of people to radiation worldwide and to assess the scientific information on the effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. The document discusses the following: What is radiation? How is radiation measured? How are people exposed to radiation? What levels of radiation exposure do people receive? What are the effects of exposure to radiation? moreless

Trump’s transition team has circulated a 74-point questionnaire at the Department of Energy asking for the names of employees and contractors who have attended climate change policy conferences, and associated emails and documents. This document is being scrutinised in an attempt to predict the new government’s climate policy. These questions could serve as the basis for a purge of EPA employees, and casts doubts on virtually all climate mitigation scenarios. moreless

In the later part of 2016 the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the French Academies (National Academy of Technologies of France and French Academy of Sciences) set up a joint Franco-Chinese study group. Its general objective was to prepare a common position paper to distill policies and technology options, including safety and waste management, for making nuclear power generation a component of future energy mixes in countries with the appropriate potential for implementing this energy. moreless

Substantial reduction in carbon intensity drives carbon emissions to peak between 2020 and 2040 across the three scenarios. Still, to reach global climate targets, the world needs an exceptional and enduring effort on top of already pledged commitments, and coordinated global action at unprecedented levels, with meaningful carbon prices. moreless
