Waste: Waste is related to most of the productive and consumption activities of the modern world, and is especially acute in the developed world. Some waste can be economically recycled into useful products, and some have an economic cost that must be financed by societies. Some is toxic and must be neutralized. Some, like nuclear waste can be usefully transformed into more GHG free energy, but is infrequently used due to political decisions.

A 500 megawatt coal plant produces 3.5 billion kilowatt-hours per year, enough to power a city of about 140,000 people. It burns 1,430,000 tons of coal, uses 2.2 billion gallons of water and 146,000 tons of limestone. It also puts out, each year, a frightening list of noxious and toxic compounds.
